Chemical Engineering Inside-Out

Today's the second day and I have chosen.....Chemical Engineering. Here's the specs on the branch.
About Chemical Engineering
Chemical engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with the application of physical science (e.g. chemistry and physics), life sciences (e.g. biology, microbiology and biochemistry) with mathematics to the process of converting raw materials or chemicals into more useful or valuable forms. In addition to producing useful materials, modern chemical engineering is also concerned with pioneering valuable new materials and techniques - such as nanotechnology, fuel cells and biomedical engineering.
Chemical Engineering involves the principles of chemistry together with physic, mathematics and mechanical engineering to create many new things. The study requires converting chemicals and raw materials into useful products and help in finding new materials and techniques of their usage.
The course prepares student to problem solving such as the production or use of chemicals and biochemical, using application of principles of chemistry. The course also trains a student on awareness of all aspects of chemicals manufacturing and how the manufacturing process affects the environment and the safety of workers and consumers.
The course covers production of plastics, paints, fuels, fibers, medicines, fertilizers, semiconductors, paper, and all other kinds of chemicals, by carrying out chemical reactions and purifications
Course Duration
4 years BE/ B.Tech
Education Stream
Science
Specialization
Areas of specialization for chemical engineers are quite diverse. Some areas to choose from include:
  • Pollution control
  • Biotechnology
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Metals
  • Fertilizers and pesticides
  • Automotive
  • Plastics
  • Manufacturing
  • Forensics
  • Thermodynamics
  • Food sciences
  • Cosmetics
  • Chemical safety
  • Education and training
  • Missile and space
  • Minerals and metals
  • Plastics and resins
  • Waste management
Will The Course Suit Me?
Chemical Engineering requires practical application of science but also requires following attributes in individual. They are:
  • Sharp, analytical and practical mind
  • Give attention to details
  • Good at organizing and solving problems
  • Natural curiosity
  • Ability to work in teams as well as alone
  • Problem solving skills
  • Ability to keep calm under work pressures
  • Ability to make critical observations and appropriate decisions
Tasks as a Chemical Engineer
Chemical engineers perform many tasks in the course of a project. Responsible for the outcome of the ideas they implement, chemical engineers must be analytical and detail oriented. Some of the things a chemical engineer does are as follows:
  • Develop or improve products, processes, and procedures
  • Perform process monitoring
  • Conduct research
  • Design industrial environments
  • Monitor quality and make recommendations for improvement
  • Make presentations to management
  • Evaluate capacities
  • Select equipment, materials, and instruments
  • Prepare initial prototype proposal packages
  • Develop procedures to ensure health and safety
